5.5 magnitude quake hits off S. Korea's southeastern coast - state media

A powerful natural disaster struck the South Korean city of Pohang on Wednesday, with local media reporting that resulting tremors were felt hundreds of kilometers away in Seoul.

The quakes were felt in the South Korean capital, Seoul, some 270km from Pohang, Yonhap said, citing the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The Korean peninsula rarely has to worry about significant quakes.

Analysts were monitoring "unusual seismic activity" in North Korea, the head of the nuclear test monitoring agency CTBTO said.

South Korean media showed crumbled walls piled on parked cars, broken windows from some buildings and elementary school students taking shelter on a playground.

Reports of shaking buildings and toppling furniture flooded in from Seoul to Jeju Island.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or injuries. No damage to them has been reported.

Tremors were felt across the country but operations at nuclear reactors were not affected, the state-run nuclear operator Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co said in a statement.

The Korea Meteorological Administration reported a second tremor, with a magnitude of 5.4, about nine kilometers from Pohang.
