Lord of the Rings TV series to be a prequel
Amazon said it will produce a multiseason series that explores new storylines preceding author J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Fellowship of the Ring", the first installment in the famed fantasy trilogy. The company is partnering with New Line Cinema, the film company behind the much-loved trilogy that was first released in 2001.
Even as Game of Thrones begins to film its eighth and final seasons, other television networks are desperate to find their own epic fantasy series. Some fans even speculate that the adaptation would also include The Silmarillion, a posthumously published prequel to the Lord of the Rings novel series-which is what should excite "Tolkeinheads" more specifically. These new TV shows will be produced in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, book publisher HarperCollins and Warner Bros.
13, the streaming service announced that it had acquired the global rights to a multi-season Lord of the Rings television series in a deal that is reportedly close to $250 million.
The TV adaptation will cover different ground, focusing on "previously unexplored stories based on Tolkien's original writings", Mr Matt Galsor, a representative for the Tolkien Estate and Trust and HarperCollins, said in a statement.
