Firefox Quantum arrives with faster browser engine, major visual overhaul, and Google as default search engine

Firefox Quantum 57 Is Here To Kill Google Chrome: Download For Windows, Mac, Linux

Firefox Quantum is now available on Windows, Mac and Linux, with iOS and Android versions set to arrive in the future.

Google is the new default search provider in the United States and Canada.

Firefox was one of the fastest growing Internet browsers in the late 2000s. At the end of 2011, though, Google Chrome's dominance exploded, overtaking both browsers easily. But those were just the tip of the iceberg.

The only down side - or potential down side, if you consider it as such - is the addition of "Recommendations" in the Firefox startup page. The Android version is trickling out slowly on Google Play and the iOS version (which is usually updated separately from the other platforms) should eventually arrive on Apple's App Store. Mozilla says that it wants to make Firefox the fastest browser on the planet for PCs and mobile devices, and it says that improvements are still on the way for the rest of 2017.

The non-profit organisation says development focused around sped, with a brand new core processor powering the software, alongside a new Stylo CSS engine and "Photon" user interface. Mozilla claims that Quantum also uses 30% less memory than Google's Chrome browser, and is meant for those who surf the net by opening a million different tabs and rapidly switching between all of them. The most significant change is the introduction of a new multi-process architecture that allows code to run in parallel and improves memory consumption. It all adds up to a once-in-a-decade overhaul which Mozilla claims will be "fast for good".

The biggest change? It's blazing fast, running twice as fast as the Firefox of just six months ago. The company has also fixed hundreds of issues related to Firefox speed to make this latest version better. "In fact, nearly 75% of the Firefox code was impacted all to give you a browser that is fast, intuitive and modern on all of your devices".

"We call this initiative Photon, and its goal is to modernize and unify anything that we call Firefox while taking advantage of the speedy new engine", the team explained.

The Photon UI has also been streamlined compared to previous versions of Firefox, and is created to provide smooth and fast performance when browsing your favorite websites.
