The diamond itself was cut from a 404 carat rough rock which was found in February of 2016 in Angloa's Lulo mines.

The diamond weighs more than 163 carats and is part of an emerald and diamond necklace called "De Art in Greizogno" (the Swiss jewelery company "De Grizogono").

The world's biggest diamond ever to be put up for sale at an auction fetched £25 million late on Tuesday.

To show the diamond at its best, a team of jewellers has worked for over a year, setting the stone into a necklace containing nearly 6,000 emeralds and over 800 smaller diamonds.

A further highlight of the sale was Le Grand Mazarin, a light pink diamond of 19.07 carats, and one of the most famous and important Golconda diamonds in history. The stone was the largest of its kind ever auctioned.

Unsurprisingly it comes with a hefty price tag.

And it graced the crown of Napoleon I, Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie, among others.

It has been auctioned off once before: It was among the French Crown Jewels sold off in 1887 - 17 years after France's Second Empire collapsed and Napoleon III and his wife Emperess Eugenie sought exile in England, leaving their jewels behind.

The Geneva fall auction season concludes on Wednesday, when Sotheby's will auction a pink diamond estimated to be worth as much as $30m.
