23 injured in Singapore MRT train accident
SMRT Corporation, the operator of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore, and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) are investigating a train accident today at the Joo Koon station.
After three hours, the SMRT reported that the fault had been cleared but trains and stations on the Circle Line were crowded. "At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train", the LTA and the SMRT said in a joint statement.
According to Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), injured passengers, numbering at least 23, were brought to Ng Teng Fong Hospital and Singapore General Hospital. At 8:19, a second train stopped behind the first train in trouble.
The Joo Koon station is on the East-West Line, popularly referred to as the Green line, and has 35 stations between the Tuas Link and Changi Airport.
The worst glitches occurred in December 2011, delaying more than 200,000 people in the last weekend before the Christmas holiday, and led to the resignation of SMRT's chief executive officer at the time. There are five stops to the Tuas Link station from the Joo Koon station.
In a post, Mei Anne said: "So I'm on the train that hit the other one in front!"
The train, which comprised six carriages, had a full capacity of 1,800 passengers, 156 of whom were injured during the peak-hour collision.
Commuters alighting at Joo Koon station were also asked by SMRT staff not to take photos of the accident scene. "We are doing all we can to restore services safely and expeditiously", the post said, adding that free bus and bridging bus services would be available between Boon Lay and Tuas Link.
