The former "Daily Show" host said he hopes the explosion of sexual harassment allegations against powerful men will bring about change. "Could I have done more?' I think we all could have". He continued, "You give your friends the benefit of the doubt, I try to think of it in terms of, I've had friends who have had compulsions and have done things, gambling or drinking, and drugs, and we've lost some of them, some of them have died".
Later, the Daily Show host remembered the first time he had heard about the sexual misconduct accusations about Louis C.K., which he had been caught off guard with by an audience member while recording a podcast. So to do it was an act of bravery in and of itself.
"A year ago, I was doing a podcast with David Axelrod and a man in the audience asked me about it", Stewart said on Tuesday.
"I think it's a question of, 'We're used to being in charge.' And I think when you talk to women, they're in a very difficult position, and you get mad at yourself too for laughing it off, or for thinking, 'That didn't happen, ' and it's hard".
Following the New York Times report, in which five women accused C.K. of masturbating in front of them, I Love You, Daddy distributor the Orchard announced that it would not move forward with the release.
One of the reasons that a reaction from Stewart was as anticipated as much as it was was due in large part to his reaction a year ago when he was asked about what were then rumors of C.K.'s behavior. In the video (below), which has recently been recirculating around social media, Stewart laughed off the question and responded, "So the internet said Louis harassed women?" After initially declining to comment, CK eventually issued a public statement the following day (November 10), saying that the "stories are true" and that he has "been remorseful of my actions". I'm not that connected to that world.
Stewart said he hasn't spoke with Louis C.K. since the New York Times bombshell report broke last Thursday.
