Prior to leaving for Thiruvananthapuram, the minister told mediapersons that he would quit if anything adverse against him formed part of the high court verdict.
In a setback to the Pinarayi Vijayan government, the Kerala High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition by state Transport Minister Thomas Chandy for quashing the Alappuzha district collector's report which alleged large-scale land grab by him to build a plush resort.
Ticking the minister off, the HC on Tuesday asked how he, as a minister, could petition the court against the government.
In two sessions, on either side of the lunch break, the judges made a number of damning observations about the minister. "Otherwise also I will ask the CM about what needs to be done". There was once a Kayal (lake) Raja, Murikkummoottil Thommen Joseph, who created history worth emulating in the 1930s by converting about 2,000 acres of a lake into the cultivable paddy fields of Kuttanad. "It would be appropriate for Thomas Chandy to fight this issue legally as a common citizen". On Monday, Pannyan Raveendran, leader of Communist Party of India, LDF's second biggest constituent, demanded Chandy step down, whereas Kerala's senior-most communist leader V.S. Achuthanandan said, "Chandy should be thrown out of the cabinet".
Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala told reporters in Palakkad on Tuesday that it's surprising that while Vijayan was quick to get the resignation of his close aide E.P. Jayarajan and A.K. Saseendran, in Chandy's case that did not happen.
"It shows that you have no trust in your own government and chief minister", the bench said, observing it was "extremely improper" for a minister to file a petition against his own government.
The LDF entrusted chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday to take a decision.
The state leadership of the Congress has expressed their strong resentment to the party high command. "If there are adverse remarks against me in the verdict, then I will approach Supreme Court to seek justice".
