UC Browser has mysteriously disappeared from the Google Play Store in India
15 November 2017, 09:23 | Cameron Gross
UC Browser is not available for download on Google's Play Store
UC Browser, which is a popular browser in India with over 500 million downloads globally, has disappeared from the Google Play Store. However, as time passed on, other companies who develop their own high-end browsers have emerged.
There have been no announcements done on the subject either from Google or UC Web.
In August too, the UC Browser had come under the government's scanner for alleged leak of mobile data of its Indian users.
The browser gained momentum in India over the last few years for its speed and sheer number of features, which included a robust download manager, customizable add-ons, and integration with third-party services. Like sending user data back to China, something that China-based application developers often get accused of in addition to shady practices like tag-jacking (so as to top app store searches), using misleading names, copying the names of popular apps and lots and lots of ads (including lock screen ones that just won't go away). Today's delisting doesn't seem to be related to the security vulnerabilities reported in that article, however.
Android Authority notes that UC Browser mini, a, well, mini version of the app, is still available in the Android app store. A senior IT ministry official had then told news agency PTI that it may face ban in the country if found guilty.
While Chrome has since reinstated some of its dominance, back in June, UC Browser became India's favourite mobile browser and at one point grasped over 50 percent market share. UC Web claims that it has up to 100 million total monthly active users in India. The report also ranked the UC Browser as the sixth most-downloaded application on Android platform in India.
