Weeks after deadly tunnel attack, Israel and Islamic Jihad exchange threats

Israel issues strong warning against Hamas and Islamic Jihad

Israeli forces yesterday arrested senior Islamic Jihad leader Tariq Qa'adan after they stormed his house in the West Bank's northern occupied city of Jenin.

Israel's October 30 blowing up of the tunnel resulted in the deaths of 12 Palestinian fighters from Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

The Iranian-backed group has threatened to carry out attacks after the tunnel was demolished last month, killing a dozen militants.

PIJ is Gaza's second-largest terror faction behind Hamas, with an estimated 10,000 armed members as well as its own rocket arsenal and tunnel network. "We advise the Islamic Jihad leadership in Damascus to be careful and get things under control", he continued.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Gaza militants Sunday against attacks as the Islamic Jihad group vowed revenge for the demolition of one of its tunnels that crossed into Israel. The IDF wants to prepare a quick response in the event that the Islamic Jihad decides to act and also to enable the work on the barrier to continue. "They are playing with fire with the residents of the Gaza Strip and at the expense of Palestinian reconciliation and the entire region", he said in Arabic, adding that the terror group's leader Ramadan Shalah and his deputy Ziad Nakhaleh would be "held accountable" for the consequences of their actions.

"We strongly condemn the remarks of Mladenov which ignore the crimes of invaders, the threats against our people, and their right of self-defense", Hamas said in a written statement.

Israel has always been concerned about the use of tunnels built by Hamas to both store weapons and infiltrate fighters into the country. The destruction from three Israeli offensives since 2008, including damage to the enclave's water, sanitation, energy, and medical facilities, coupled with slow reconstruction due to the blockade, led the United Nations to warn that Gaza could be "uninhabitable" by 2020.
