Winless Browns fire VP of football operations

The Plan was executed as Browns fire Sashi Brown

Jackson being safe at this time is something of a surprise given the context of the winless campaign but, in the end, it appears that Cleveland's leadership decided it was the roster, not the coaching, that is dooming the Browns at this point.

The Browns fired executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown on Thursday, ending his two-year tenure as head of Cleveland's personnel department that began in January 2016.

The next GM will be the Browns' ninth since 1999, and will be the fourth leader of the front office that Haslam has hired since his purchase of the team from Randy Lerner was approved by the league's owners on October 16, 2012.

Brown was able to build a nice nest egg for any future general manager or front office.

The Browns have stockpiled picks for future drafts, with six additional picks in April's draft. Since taking ownership in 2012, Haslam has fired five other football executives and four coaches.

The Browns are 19-67 since, and 1-30 since Week 15 of the 2015 season. His firing is not unexpected since the Browns are 0-12 for the second straight season with Brown in charge. ESPN's Adam Schefter and Dianni Russini reported the news. They elected to pass on both Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson, who have performed like franchise players in a small sample. It's also extremely self-serving to submit that Jackson, Cleveland's play-caller, knew in advance that his team would have trouble putting points up on the board.

Brown and Jackson appeared to be at odds over several roster decisions and Haslam figured his best course of action was to end the relationship rather than attempting to fix it. We witnessed this with the botched trade of AJ McCarron from Cincinnati who many believe was Brown's undermining of the decision to acquire the backup quarterback. McCarron prior to the NFL's October 31 trade deadline.
