A white former police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man fleeing a 2015 traffic stop in SC could learn as soon as Thursday whether he will spend the rest of his life in prison for violating the motorist's civil rights. He added tht Slager obstructed justice with inaccurate statements to law enforcement after the shooting.

Norton will announce Slager's sentence later Thursday. The 50-year-old man ran from his vehicle and Slager gave chase.

"Sentencing is the worst part of the best job in the world", Norton said in the courtroom.

Slager theoretically could have received a life sentence, but most legal observers had expected a sentence in the 12-to 15-year range if Norton had categorized the crime as voluntary manslaughter.

The shooting erupted following a daytime traffic stop on April 4, 2015. Some shootings were justified; some were not.

A 3-D expert testified for the defense that the taser could've landed behind Slager because Scott threw it there, or it fell and bounced behind him. A bystander's cellphone video of the shooting drew national attention to the case.

The federal prosecution hammered in the fact that Scott was running away when the first shot was sacked and continued to run away until he fell.

Slager's attorney, Andy Savage of Charleston, introduced evidence during the hearing to contend that Scott had resisted arrest and posed a threat to the officer in the seconds before the shooting.

Had there been no video, prosecutors said, it is likely Slager would not have been prosecuted. The former officer agreed to plead guilty to a federal civil rights violation. In this case, the abuse was the killing of Scott.

Slager pleaded not guilty, and his attorney said at trial previous year that his client feared for his life.

The defense said that North Charleston's homicide rates have gone up following the possible chilling effect of Slager's 2016 state murder charges.

State prosecutors had tried Slager for murder last fall, but the judge declared a mistrial after a mostly white jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict-either on the charge of murder or a lesser manslaughter charge.

However, Savage said his client believed that Scott could have been armed based on the fact that he fled from the traffic stop which was initiated by a broken brake light on Scott's vehicle. But the Scott family successfully pleaded for calm, asking everyone to let the justice system run its course.
