Right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood - not Shohei Ohtani - solidified his future by inking a three-year deal with the Cubs Thursday afternoon.
The Cubs could potentially lose right-hander Jake Arrieta as a free agent this offseason, so signing Chatwood gives Chicago another bona fide starter.
While Chatwood struggled at Coors Field, he thrived on the road.
Now, it's not necessarily correct to take a player's numbers away from Coors Field and assume that's the real him - three of the other four NL West parks are big-time pitcher's parks, after all - but clearly Chatwood is someone who could benefit from the move out of Colorado. On the road, he recorded a 3.49 ERA and held foes to a.200 batting average.
Chatwood, 27, is 40-46 with two saves and a 4.31 ERA over 130 major-league appearances, including 113 starts.
Chatwood sported a 6.01 ERA and 1.68 WHIP at hitter-friendly Coors Field previous year, but his numbers on the road indicate the Cubs may have acquired a nice under-the-radar starting pitcher: 3.49 ERA, 1.23 WHIP. His career high is 158 innings and he has twice undergone Tommy John surgery.
A second-round Draft pick by the Angels in 2008, Chatwood was traded to the Rockies in November 2011 for catcher Chris Iannetta.
