Phil Bredesen to announce run for US Senate

Reports Phil Bredesen planning run for Corker's U.S. Senate seat

Bredesen also discussed his leadership success, both in business and government, and touched on the topics of health care, the opioid crisis and the economy.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke has also been mulling on the idea of running for the position.

Berke served in the state Senate during the last few years of Bredesen's second term, working with Bredesen on a variety of issues including K-12 and higher education. Bredesen served as mayor of Nashville from 1991 through 1999, and governor of Tennessee from 2002 through 2010.

Popular former Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) will run for Senate, according to two local newspapers, giving Democrats a heavy-hitting candidate for long-shot seat.

U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, former Congressman Stephen Fincher and Dr. Rolando Toyos have all announced their intentions to seek the GOP nomination.

Phil Bredesen is joining the race to become a US senator.

Bredesen is expected to formally announce his candidacy Thursday morning.

In October, political analyst Charlie Cook of The Cook Political report said Tennessee's Senate race would become a toss-up if Bredesen runs and that the seat would likely remain Republican if he did not.

The Senate campaign of Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn wasted little time in attacking Bredesen as "a 74-year-old Democrat politician" who is out of touch with Tennessee values.
