Two doctors fired after 'dead' newborn starts breathing on way to cremation

Newborn baby wrongly declared dead by Delhi hospital, dies after 6 days

The baby was born on 30 November at Max Super Speciality in Shalimar Bagh area in the national capital, while his twin sister was stillborn.

Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), also confirmed the news. The hospital wrapped the two bodies in two separate paper bags and then handed over to the family in a polythene bag.

According to the twins' grandfather, the stunned family rushed the newborn to a nearby hospital where they were told that their baby was still alive, local media reported.

"They told us that it is not okay to not perform his last rites according to tradition". Dr Sandeep Gupta, director of Delhi Newborn Centre where the baby boy died, said it was a "losing battle" from day one.

Father refuses to take body, demands arrest of 2 doctors; Case transferred to Crime Branch. The family has been demanding the arrest of the doctors allegedly responsible for the negligence.

"We don't want to keep our baby at Max hospital".

"Had the baby not been exposed for so many hours after his birth, maybe we could have probably prolonged his life longer", said Gupta.

Family members said it was unclear whether the baby would survive.

The hospital fired two doctors after an inquiry. While we understand that survival in extreme preterm births is rare, it is always painful for the parents and family.

In response to the Delhi government's report, Max Healthcare said in a statement, "We would like to thoroughly review the final report when we receive it before commenting". The report suggested that the doctors had not conducted electrocardiography to check whether the babies it declared dead were still alive or not.

"We wish to clarify that this action should not presuppose finding of any lapse by the expert group and should not be construed in any way to be anything other than an expression of our continued commitment to providing quality healthcare", the statement from Max Healthcare said.

Satyender Jain, state's health minister stated that the hospital could lose its license if a probe found it guilty of medical negligence.
