The only way Tarantino would sign on to do the "Star Trek" film was if the studio would agree to an "R" rating, which is typically not done with tentpole features such as these but to get such a high profile writer/director on board, Paramount and Abrams both agreed to his demands.
Secondly, the film will be written by Mark L. Smith, best known for writing the bear-on-Leonardo DiCaprio hardcore film The Revanant, and that, perhaps, is the most worrying detail to emerge in the last few days. On top of that, "Deadpool" proved a year ago that even R-rated films can make a splash at the box office. It is also unknown if the new Trek adventure will involve the current cast, or even take place in the same alternative timeline to the original William Shatner-led series.
Deadpool and Logan from 20th Century Fox proved to be very profitable. More on the Tarantino Star Trek movie below. If he's selected, he will overtake Justin Lin who directed 2016's Star Trek Beyond. Pearce's script credits include Iron Man 3, Sherlock Holmes 3, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and the TV series Runaway TV; he just directed his script Hotel Artemis; Beer's credits are mostly upcoming, and include the Doug Liman-directed Chaos Walking, as well as Godzilla Vs. Kong, Masters of the Universe, Barbarella and Dungeons and Dragons, all big scale stuff.
More as we hear it.
It would be interesting to speculate on what a Star Trek movie would look like, with Quentin Tarantino's unique style of filmmaking. Writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were originally pegged to draft a Star Trek 4 that involved Chris Hemsworth's return as Kirk's father George, but that appears to be in limbo. Knowing Tarantino, it should be violent but entertaining at the same time.
