All jewels stolen from Paris's Ritz hotel recovered
12 January 2018, 04:07 | Devin Moran
The Ritz Hotel in Paris has formerly housed famed guests such as Ernest Hemingway Coco Chanel and Princess Diana
A masked group armed with axes, sledgehammers and guns stormed the landmark Ritz Hotel in the Chic Place Vendome in central Paris.
Workers cleaned up shattered glass Thursday morning and started to fix damage from the robbery in one of the world's most prestigious neighborhoods.
Axe-wielding raiders entered the hotel through an unmarked side door, smashed display cases and threw bags of goods out of a window to at least two accomplices outside, say police.
The motorcyclist, however, dropped one satchel of loot after hitting a pedestrian in a melee fleeing the scene.
The robbers, wearing balaclavas and gloves, entered through a rear staff entrance and swiped gems and watches worth over four million euros ($4.8 million). The three inside were then blocked when they tried to flee through another door, the official said.
The getaway auto was found about 20km north of Paris in an area where the three arrested came from. One suspect may have acted as a lookout while the other grabbed the jewels from a display case, police said.
"I can confirm that all the stolen jewels were found in the bag recovered by police officers", the source said.
Three suspects are in police custody and will continue to be held for an extended 24 hours, a judicial source told CNN.
A police team in charge of patrolling the square - home to some of Paris's top jewellers and watchmakers, as well as the justice ministry - was quickly on the scene.
Several high-end Paris jewellery stores have been targets of dramatic robberies in recent years, including Cartier, Harry Winston and Chopard. Kim Kardashian West said she lost millions of dollars' worth of jewelry when she was robbed at gunpoint in a Paris apartment in October 2016. The hotel has housed such famous names as Ernest Hemingway and Coco Chanel.
Princess Diana had dined in the hotel's Imperial Suite on August 31, 1997, shortly before her tragic death in a vehicle crash in Paris.
