Calcutta HC to hear PIL against degree conferment to Mamata
The petition claimed that the decision of the syndicate and senate of the university to honour Banerjee with a D.Litt was arbitrary and devoid of any proper reasoning.
Earlier on Oct 25 a year ago, following a meeting of the university's Senate-Syndicate, CU's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, announced to award Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with honourary D.Litt degree during the prestigious institute's convocation in south Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha.
In last two times, Banerjee did not attend the convocation ceremony despite being invited by the university.
Former Vice Chancellor of North Bengal University Ranju Gopal Mukhopadhyay had filed the petition in the high court on Monday.
The Calcutta High Court had said earlier in the day that it will continue hearing a Public Interest Litigation against the university's decision but will not stop the event, NDTV reported.
The petitioner mentioned that conferring the degree to Banerjee will undermine the standard of the university and the prestige of the award.
The Indian chief minister said they will be given shelter in Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri districts.
The West Bengal government told the HC that a PIL challenging Calcutta University's decision to confer honorary D.Litt to CM Mamata was politically motivated. "The same people have chose to honour the chief minister with the honorary DLitt". Advocate General Kishore Dutta said the plea was "out and out in political interest", and that "except character assassination, nothing is there", reported PTI.
