Dion Waiters To Have Season-Ending Knee Surgery
12 January 2018, 11:21 | Regina Holmes
Dion Waiters will undergo season-ending surgery on left ankle
Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters is expected to miss the remainder of the season and undergo surgery on his left ankle, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo! The Heat's regular season ends April 11. To reach that incentive, he would have to play in 40 of Miami's final 41 games, which is unlikely given his current status and might lead him to make a decision soon. In his absence, the team has gone 7-2, entering Thursday with a six-game winning streak under its belt.
Waiters' year ends with 14.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 23.7 FanDuel points per game.
Waiters said in September he was told last season that the estimated timetable for a return from such surgery would be eight to 10 months.
Over the course of his six-year National Basketball Association tenure, Waiters has appeared in at least 70 games only twice.
The Heat have won six straight games and moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-17 record. Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson and Wayne Ellington will continue to take on heavier workloads, with Johnson and Richardson in particular having the ball in their hands more often.
