Wheeles said one of those semis was carrying hazardous chemicals.

"The transformers on the side of the expressway began to explode in a sequential manner, and after two of them exploded, then the power lines that go across the expressway all fell", he said.

After the burned out damage was cleared away, IN DOT crews were able to assess the damage to the roads.

Westbound traffic was being diverted off I-80/94 at Grant Street, and eastbound traffic was being diverted off at Cline Avenue. Further repairs to the asphalt will be needed, Maginity said, but they will need to wait until the temperatures warm up.

According to a release from ISP Sgt. Stephen Wheeles, Indiana State Police responded to a personal injury crash I-65S near the 43-mile marker just after 4:30am on Wednesday.

Wheeles said the company hired to clean up the spill told crews that the chemicals had mixed, which led to the fire. "So that's kind of what we're waiting on".

UPDATE: An I-65 crash that happened early Wednesday morning is now causing problems for responders.

"Something inside that trailer ruptured, which caused the chemicals to leak", Wheeles said. One passenger was injured but is expected to be okay.

Authorities say the collision caused one of the trailers to leak a hazardous chemical, and eventually at least one of the rigs caught fire, sending black smoke billowing into the air.
