NBA: “Golden state” beat “Houston”, “Oklahoma” lost “clippers”
Thursday night's marquee TNT matchup between the Rockets and the defending champion Golden State Warriors had already lost some of its luster with James Harden out after suffering a hamstring strain on Sunday.
The Paul to Capela strategy would take over early in the third, and the lead would extend to more than 20 points, essentially putting the game away for good.
But what this game might've lacked in star power, it made up for in star turns, as journeyman Gerald Green - who was signed December 28 - and usual sixth man Eric Gordon went shot-for-shot with Golden State's three remaining All-Stars before the Warriors pulled away late.
All in all, Green is averaging 16.8 points per game with the Rockets, hitting 56.8 percent of his shots beyond the arc.
Reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Westbrook scored 29 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and handed out 11 assists for the Thunder, who notched their second win in as many nights in Los Angeles after a 133-96 rout of the Lakers on Wednesday. But a Houston win Thursday would have been a nice psychological edge for Paul, whose Clippers teams were often humiliated by the Warriors, who have always seemed particularly hell-bent on beating Paul's teams.
Post Up: In Rhythm
Draymond Green had a triple-double with 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.
For a team in desperate need of depth outside of their top players, the Houston Rockets seem to have struck gold with Gerald Green. They won't throw him a ton of pick-and-roll possessions, but any secondary creation he can bring to the second unit will boost the Rockets' offense in this time without Harden. Western Conference, 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall.
The Warriors are now 21-5 with Durant sidelined since he joined the team previous year.
The Warriors have won eight of their last 10 when playing the second game of a back-to-back (6-4 ATS) compared to losing four of seven (1-5-1 ATS) under that same scenario for the Rockets. "I didn't want to mess with that, that's his moneymaker".
"I probably would've been excited if I shot that and made that or not", Thompson said.
