President Donald Trump said Tuesday he would beat Oprah Winfrey in a potential 2020 presidential match-up, though he doesn't think she will end up running.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have always broken down the fact that Oprah Winfrey is a top globalist, a top eugenicist, who pushes a one world religion through her private foundation", he ranted. Some saw in it the framework for a run at the US presidency, with CNN perhaps overly optimistically claiming that unnamed sources close to Winfrey say she is "actively thinking" about throwing her hat in the ring (this, despite the fact that she herself confirmed that she has no plans to run).
On the other hand, I could argue that she should be disqualified simply on the basis of her promotion of "The Secret", a multimedia juggernaut that claimed that the entire universe and every moment of human experience are governed by "the law of attraction".
Oprah Winfrey was an influential backer of the 2008 presidential campaign of then-senator Barack Obama.
It is not the first time that Ms Winfrey's name has been associated with a White House bid.
But while her Golden Globes speech certainly struck a chord, and, as King described it, was "the right person giving the right speech at the right time", it wasn't written "as a launching pad for what she wants to do".
The incident was eventually reported to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who gave the case to Rosa Parks, the activist and civil rights icon best known for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in 1955. There's a strong possibility that, just as Trump did in the 2016 primaries, she'd suck up every ounce of media attention, limiting the ability of the more experienced and serious candidates to make their case to primary voters.
Like Trump, Winfrey would approach the electorate as a billionaire media celebrity with an intense following. And if that's true, I would just like to say Oprah you will never be President. now we just wait and see. That was before most of the Trump administration to date and also before a national reckoning about the way women are treated in this country.
"If she'd do it, she'd be fantastic", Trump said then. But it was her support of women calling out sexual harassment that fueled talk among Democrats in states where presidential runs usually begin, Iowa and New Hampshire. "She's popular, she's brilliant, she's a wonderful woman". "It would be a pretty good ticket".
CNN quoted two anonymous "close friends" as saying Winfrey was "actively thinking" about a presidential run.
