Europe experiences deadly Storm Eleanor havoc

Storm Eleanor batters Europe, bringing chaos and destruction

The Met Office said the temperature was likely to fall to as low as -10C (14F) in Scotland, gradually warming to -3C in the south of England on Saturday night.

Storm Eleanor has brought chaos to Europe, after first hitting the United Kingdom with 100mph (160kmph) winds and heavy rain.

The Met Office had issued an amber "be prepared" warning of wind for the southern-most fringes of the country overnight, which has expired. There was no severe flood warning - the most critical level - in the UK.

Storm Eleanor is expected to carry on through until tomorrow and was the first named storm of 2018.

Christened Storm Burglind in Germany, roofs were ripped from homes and transport was disrupted when the country was hit by gusts of more than 75mph (120kmph).

An amber warning was also issued for parts of the Republic of Ireland as well.

Gusts of 100mph were recorded at Great Dunn Fell, near Penrith, in the early hours of this morning.

The national weather agency has extended its top-level Orange alert for winds of up to 200 km/h (124 mph) and high waves to 51 departments as the storm continues.

The risky conditions could lead to injuries and a danger of life, as materials and objects go flying.

"Although the winds have eased from what they were last night we will still experience strong to gale force westerly winds for the rest of today".

Storm Caroline smashed into the United Kingdom this morning, unleashing "devastating" 90mph winds that have shut schools and sparked travel chaos.

Massive waves and high winds linked to Storm Eleanor battering a lighthouse and sea wall in Porthcawl, Wales.

"If you're travelling, please check your route before setting off and don't drive through flood water". Trees, branches and other flying debris were reported as having brought down power lines and poles.

The storm has now moved to the North Sea and forecasters predict that winds are likely to slow as the day goes on (January 3).

A woman who went into labour as Storm Eleanor smashed into the United Kingdom was flown 60 miles by rescue helicopter to a specialist neonatal unit in gale force winds.

The unsafe winds have now wreaked havoc and caused damage on the coast.
