NYC reports fewest number of traffic fatalities since 1910

Queens Leads With Record Low in Traffic Fatalities as 2017 Marked Safest Year on Record

Pedestrian fatalities dropped 32 percent last year from 2016, making 2017 the safest year on New York City streets since record keeping began in 1910, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Monday.

Officials noted that although the number of cyclists in the city has doubled since 2006, the number of deaths has remained relatively static, at between 12 and 24 a year, according to a study released last summer by several city agencies. "The lower speed limit, increased enforcement and safer street designs are all building on each other to keep New Yorkers safe". His second term began last week.

"Vision Zero is working", de Blasio said.

Last year's 23 fatalities among cyclists were almost double the number of bike riders who died in 2013, the year before Vision Zero was instituted.

While stressing that even a single traffic death is one too many, officials said that NY was moving in the opposite direction of the national trend.

While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports a 13 percent increase in traffic fatalities nationwide between 2013 and 2016, the city has seen lower pedestrian fatalities and lower traffic fatalities overall. "We know we have much more work to do to fully achieve Vision Zero".

"There's a lot more to do", the mayor said of the program and the $1.6 billion five-year commitment attached to it. Of the 231 people, 148 were pedestrians.

In May an intoxicated man steered a auto along sidewalks for three city blocks in Times Square, killing a young woman and injuring at least 22 people.

"The "boulevard of death" is now the 'boulevard of life, '" de Blasio said.

"Queens Boulevard is proof that longstanding notions of intractable problems can be solved with determination, perseverance and fresh thinking", said New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer. Across the city, 23 cyclists were killed past year - five more than in 2016. "We put $100 million into fixing Queens Boulevard, into redesigning it, and in the last three years we have not lost a single pedestrian or cyclist".

But bicycle fatalities were up in 2017.
