Manila churchmen appeal for clean Black Nazarene feast

FILE Millions of devotees are expected to participate in the annual procession of the Black Nazarene on January 9

Handkerchiefs printed with the image of the Black Nazarene and a prayer are among the items being sold along Quiapo's streets in time for the "traslacion" on January 9, 2018.

The Manila Police District (MPD) will implement a 48-hour gun ban in the city in line with the feast of the Black Nazarene next week.

Classes at all levels and work at the Manila city hall are suspended for the feast of the Black Nazarene on January 9, Mayor Joseph Estrada announced yesterday.

Manila is hosting the International Pilgrimage of the Black Nazarene.

Officials of the Manila Police District (MPD) yesterday inspected the route of the traslacion or the procession of the Black Nazarene.

Likewise, Balilo said that boats would be deployed in the areas under bridges where the procession would pass through.

"Let us become ecological stewards like how we protect the image of the Black Nazarene during the procession", said the priest.

But church officials and sociologists say devotees see the event as a challenge.

Millions of Catholic devotees are expected to join the procession.

"Filipinos who come to Quiapo... get a sense of being near the Lord, of the Lord touching them and of the Lord accompanying them... through hard challenges", Quiapo church parochial vicar Father Marvin Cruz told AFP.

Aside from the thanksgiving procession last December 31, Badong said there would be a procession of the replicas of the image of the Black Nazarene on January 7.

The administration of Quiapo Church on Monday said 18 million devotees were expected to flood the streets of Manila during the procession or the Traslacion from Quirno Grandstand to the Quiapo Church basilica.

The city's top traffic cop, Superintendent Lucile Faycho, said the estimate was based on the number of attendees over the last six years.

Brig. Gen. Alan Arrojado, newly appointed commander of the military's Joint Task Force in the National Capital Region, said the military has always considered the possibility of a terrorist attack on the yearly feast.
