Paul Manafort Sues DOJ, Special Counsel For Mission Creep

Rep. Maxine Waters' Poem About Trump Officials Being Sent to Jail Is Pure Gold

In addition to the indictments of Manafort and Gates, Mueller's office has secured guilty pleas for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation from Trump's former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and former campaign aide George Papadopoulos.

Trump's former campaign manager pled not guilty to the charges laid against by Mueller, which includes alleged conspiracy against the United States and money laundering in relation to his consulting work in Ukraine.

The thrust of Manafort's argument is that Mueller has no business sticking his nose in any of the pre-Trump campaign work he did with Ukraine, which has nothing to do with the special counsel's mandate to investigate criminal activity stemming from Russia's role in the election.

Wisenberg pointed out that Manafort's lawyer concedes the attorney general or somebody acting in his place - in this case, Rosenstein - has the authority to set the special counsel's jurisdiction.

Manafort, who was charged in October along with former campaign aide Rick Gates, is asking the court to effectively nullify the charges against him - and stop Mueller's investigation from ranging beyond matters directly related to Russia's interference.

The longtime political consultant was under house arrest for much of November and December of past year after a judge indicted him and one of his business associates, Rick Gates, on several felony charges in October, including conspiracy against the United States and acting as an unregistered foreign agent.

Under the terms of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's order in May appointing Mueller, the special prosecutor not only can probe links or coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation but also can look into "any matters that arose or may arise directly" from the investigation.

Attorneys said Manafort met with federal prosecutors and FBI agents on July 30, 2014, as part of an investigation into the activities of a former Ukrainian president.

Manafort sues DOJ and special counsel who...

In previous court filings, prosecutors said they've collected 400,000 documents related to Manafort and Gates' case, and identified 2,000 of those documents as especially relevant. Rosenstein gave Mueller the authority to dig into "any matters that arose or may arise directly from" that investigation.

Paul Manafort, the previous Trump crusade director prosecuted on tax evasion and different charges, recorded a claim testing the wide expert of extraordinary advice Robert Mueller and asserting the Justice Department disregarded the law in designating Mueller.

An Oct. 27 indictment accuses Manafort and a long-time associate, Rick Gates, of failing to register as agents in the US for political consulting they performed for Ukraine and for pro-Russian politicians there. No special counsel should be given unlimited authority to investigate anything he wants with no oversight or accountability, and that's exactly the situation in which we now find ourselves with Mueller.

The complaint continued, "Those alleged dealings had no connection whatsoever to the 2016 presidential election or even to Donald Trump". The Manafort lawyers say that goes beyond what the law allows Rosenstein to empower Mueller to do. "Nor were they uncovered in the course of the Special Counsel's probe into President Trump's campaign".
