Republican Issa is retiring: another prominent GOPer calls it quits

Ed Royce chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee has announced that he won't run a campaign for re-election in November

Staff at Issa's D.C. office told Voice of OC Wednesday morning they don't know if he's going to run for another office or not. That race was already rated a toss-up by election analysts.

Issa is the second California Republican to announce his retirement this week, after Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA) announced he was retiring after this term Monday. That means two of the four competitive Orange County House races are guaranteed new faces next year.

Although he's leaving Congress at the end of the year, constituents of the 49th congressional district may not have seen the last of Issa, as he foreshadowed at the end of his Wednesday statement.

"The model predicts that the Republicans will lose 38 seats in the House, a number that would give the Democrats a majority in the next Congress", he writes.

At issue is Trump's dismantling of the Affordable Care Act, his position on climate change, his anti-immigration rhetoric and the recently signed GOP tax bill that will disproportionately hit California's citizens who pay high mortgage interest rates and taxes that will be capped as deductions on their federal income tax returns starting in 2019.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Drew Godnich immediately released a statement following Issa's announcement.

Issa's 49th district is widely considered to be one of the seats most vulnerable to a Democratic challenger in 2018. Republicans have pressed Democrats to abandon any challenges to the Yancey and Thomas wins. Issa, while still contemplating re-election, did vote against the tax reform measure that socks it to California.

The retirement of Royce, who represents a Southern California suburban district that Hillary Clinton won by 9 percentage points in 2016, presents Democrats with just the kind of opportunity they had been hoping to seize.

However, Applegate will be facing off against three other Democrats, including Orange County environmental lawyer Mike Levin, San Diego real estate investor Paul Kerr and former State Department and United Nations aide Sara Jacobs.

On the conservative site San Diego Rostra, Brian Brady backed Harkey for Congress speculated that every North County City Council member, Assembly member and state senator will consider their chances in the next few weeks.

Last week, state officials for the 94th District seat by drawing Yancey's name, thus ensuring Republicans would retain control of the House of Delegates.

According to NPR, there are now 31 Republican lawmakers who will not seek re-election in November. About 37 percent of voters are registered Republicans, while another 31 percent are Democrats and 26.5 percent do not belong to a party.

Many Republicans want to use private sector investment to finance infrastructure projects to avoid increasing the national debt but Democrats think that government money is necessary to produce such a large package.

As much as I am looking forward to running one-on-one against @DarrellIssa later this year, it's best for the residents of the 49th Congressional District that he leave sooner rather than later.

As of the most recent reports, Issa had the most money, $852,000 remaining out of the $1.2 million he has raised.
