Teens Playing Dangerous Game

Dangerous challenge on social media focusing on laundry pods

Some participants show the liquid oozing out of their mouths, while some even cook the laundry pods first, or place them on top of real food before eating them.

Videos that seem to show people biting the appealingly designed, highly toxic, concentrated laundry detergent products, which have been around since 2012, have suddenly become hot, such as one showing "furries" (people who like to dress in animal costumes) using Tide Pods as a pizza topping.

These incidents led Tide to redesign the packaging to keep the pods out of children's reach and also give instructions on how to use the product safely. The colors have changed, so they don't look like candy.

Recently, the public's inexplicable lust for the toxic cleaning supply has reached new levels, and doctors are now warning parents that the trend has gone from harmless fun to extremely unsafe.

The American Association of Poison Control Centers says that in 2017 there were a reported 10,570 cases of laundry detergent poisonings, but that data does not include teenagers and is only for kids 5 and younger. Two of the deaths involved young children; eight involved seniors with dementia.

Laundry pods are a $1.3 billion annual business that grew more than 12 percent past year as measured by Nielsen data that excludes online sales and some club stores. In some videos, teens are putting the pods in frying pans and cooking them before consuming them.

Besides YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter also have seen an increase in posts on the eating Tide Pods meme.

Marc Pagan, 19, told CBS News he consumed a pod on a dare but knew the detergent was not meant to be eaten.

It's a social media trend that could quickly turn deadly. "They should be only used to clean clothes and kept up and away from children".

Tide issued a statement following news of the highly unsafe challenge sweeping the internet: "Our laundry packs are a highly concentrated detergent meant to clean clothes ..."
