Rain is expected to turn into freezing rain and sleet Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Buffalo said.

In Murrysville, police shut down a section of lower Ashbaugh Road between Saltsburg and Mamont roads after a mudslide blocked the road around 10:30 a.m. Temperatures will "crash" from the near 60s into the 20s.

As of Thursday afternoon, Skow said temperatures had already dropped to 16 degrees with a wind-chill reading of minus 4 degrees.

The heavy rain that is expected Friday afternoon, coupled with melting snow, prompted a flood watch for southern New England. The good news is that the precipitation will be coming to an end by midday Saturday so there shouldn't be much chance for any significant ice or snow accumulation. There's a chance of snow on Sunday and Monday.

As South Mississippi awaits warmer temperatures, people in other parts of the country are preparing for snow and mixed precipitation returning with the cold.

ESTIMATED RAINFALL. Up to 2.75 inches.

The National Weather Service is eagerly monitoring models ahead of Friday's wintry blast.

Snow is expected before 1 p.m. on Thursday with a low around 32 degrees.

The weather service says guidance suggests that we could see temperatures drop from the 50s to 30s over only a 3 hour period behind the cold front on Saturday morning.

The mercury could fall as low as 14 degrees overnight, the weather service said. Temperatures are expected to remain freezing until Sunday across the region.

The NWS suggests residents keep an eye on area waterways and be alert for sudden rises.

KYTC encourages motorists to closely watch weather forecasts as the storm arrives.
