Texas PG Andrew Jones Diagnosed With Leukemia
Graduate of University of Delaware.
Minutes after stunning No. 16 TCU, 99-98, in double overtime, teary-eyed Texas players held up Andrew Jones' No. 1 jersey during postgame celebrations Wednesday.
After undergoing a number of tests and evaluations over the past week, Andrew has been diagnosed with leukemia. "This is obviously a hard situation for our family, and we hope everyone will respect our privacy at this time". The team has offered its full support, and Texas head coach Shaka Smart has spent an extensive amount of time with Jones' family over the weekend.
Texas said only that Jones has started treatment but released no more details on his condition or prognosis as his family requested privacy, according to American-Statesman.
Irving MacArthur's Andrew Jones (10) attempts a layup in a game against Highland Park during the first half of a class 6A first-round playoff game at Lewisville High School in Lewisville on Tuesday, February 23, 2016.
During his freshman campaign, Jones averaged 11.4 points per game.
Concern regarding Jones' health first arose in late December when he returned from a fractured wrist but did not look himself.
Jones was Texas' leading scorer before the wrist injury and is now averaging 13.5 points a game while shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 46.3 percent on three pointers. He has an older brother, Anthony Jackson, and his older sister, Alexis Jones, is a rookie guard on the Minnesota Lynx.
Jones' family has dealt with challenges in the past. Jones was ejected from the auto but escaped with only some bruising.
