And this very morning, live on stage from from Mobile World Congress 2017, Shanghai, Vivo did just that: officially taking the wraps off what the company's dubbed, ingeniously, "Under Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution" - a revolutionary new glass-embedded fingerprint reader that's largely based on technology spearheaded by San Diego, California-based chip-maker, Qualcomm.

"Consumers prefer fingerprint authentication on the front of the phone, and with the industry quickly shifting to bezel-free OLED infinity displays, the natural placement of the fingerprint sensor is in the display itself", Kevin Barber, senior vice president and general manager, Mobile Division, Synaptics said. Once the user's finger is placed on the icon and successfully unlocks the phone, the fingerprint sensor icon disappears and the lower portion of the screen proceeds to function as a display for the phone. Vivo In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology replaces the physical fingerprint button on the screen, laying the foundation for a truly immersive experience. According to vivo, the in-screen fingerprint sensor will be available on a ready-to-produce smartphone soon.

It's really nerdy stuff - all you really need to know is that phones with fingerprint sensors on the front are back again. However, the sensor wasn't as responsive as Vivo would have liked.

Now that CES 2018 has been under way for a few days, the device with the new type of fingerprint sensor has indeed been demoed at the show. When waking up the phone, a blue fingerprint icon will show up where youre supposed to place your finger. The whole setup process took about a minute, and the phone read my fingerprint easily.

For all the phone enthusiasts out there, the best and the most exciting news is that this technology exists, and it works.

Yes, Vivo is the first phone, which was made available in the market with this new technology, however, it is just the beginning, and we are waiting to see new and more advanced technology this year.

That's not to say it worked all the time, though - at first the sensor often didn't recognize my finger. The display lights up the portion of the screen where the fingerprint needs to be recognized.

All in all, I'm happy to see Vivo's fingerprint innovation because Apple was rumored to be working on the same thing for the iPhone X, but reportedly ditched efforts entirely for Face ID. It is just a bit slower than what you might be used to from a traditional fingerprint scanner, but not much slower.
