On President Trump's deep roster of media combatants, no one brings it quite like "the great Stephen Miller", as Ann Coulter called him after his searing performance in a Sunday morning interview with CNN's Jake Tapper.

On Monday, CBS News reporter Arden Farhi tweeted out a transcript of Tapper and Miller's exchange when the cameras were off. "'The segment was over and Mr. Miller was politely asked to leave the set multiple times-after refusing to leave, he was escorted out by security'".

But while he was able to leave the nation's capital, he could not avoid the furore sparked by the publication of a new book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, by veteran NY journalist Michael Wolff.

Miller also defended the remarks Trump made on Saturday in which he called himself a "political genius" who made billions of dollars and then won the White House in his first political bid.

CNN's State of the Union host Jake Tapper said he got it. "I can only tell you my experience, which is that I joined the campaign in January of '16", he said, prompting Tapper to ask about Bannon's role in Miller's hiring.

"Steve Bannon's eloquence in that description notwithstanding, it's tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments, so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive", Miller said.

"You gave me two minutes", Miller shot back.

"If you want to take it that further step, I'll take the heat".

The Senate, House of Representatives and a special counsel are all investigating alleged Russian interference in the presidential election, allegations denied by both the Kremlin and Donald Trump.

Colbert then told Wolff of his impressions of the book. "This is like taking it to a whole new low", she told ABC's This Week.

TAPPER: ...and I think I've wasted enough of my viewers' time. CNN and other networks were creating a "toxic environment", he claimed, while CNN's reporting about Trump's plans to ban travel from certain Muslim countries was "one of the fake news items in the book", part of the network's "anti-Trump, hysterical coverage" and its "spectacularly false reporting". He urged his followers to "watch the hatred and unfairness of this CNN flunky!"

President Donald Trump's staunch defense of his own mental acuity this weekend all but ensured the questions mounting about his fitness will increase in the coming week, which is set to culminate Friday with his first known medical exam since taking office.
