Deadly Kansas 'Swatting' Suspect Charged With Manslaughter

Man accused in Kansas police swatting case also faces charges in Calgary Add to ...
Twenty-five-year-old Tyler Barriss was charged today in Kansas for involuntary manslaughter and two other counts in the wake of a swatting call that led police to kill an unarmed 28-year-old at his home.
Interestingly, Barriss is also wanted in Canada: The Globe and Mail reports that he is facing mischief and fraud charges in Calgary, Alberta, arising from an attempted swatting on December 22.
Barriss was given a fake address after two competitive CoD players got into an argument over an online 'Wager match, ' where he would eventually call in a phony hostage situation, leading to a massive police response to the area. Barriss is now being held on a $500,000 bond. Elements of involuntary manslaughter include the death of a person due to reckless actions by the person charged.
An officer discharged his weapon after Finch reached for his waistband, Deputy Chief Troy Livingston of the Wichita Police Department said during a news conference on Friday. He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on Thursday afternoon.
Prosecutors are also reviewing a Wichita police officer's decision to shoot Finch, Bennett said.
The officer who shot and killed Finch remains on administrative leave. The player who was the "target" of the offended player had provided the latter with a false address that led the police to Finch's home.
The Calgary Police Service allege that Barriss called 911 at about 7:40 p.m. on December 22 and told an operator he killed his father and was holding his mother and younger brother hostage in the 2300 block of 17b Street S.W.
Barris has a history of making such hoax calls, which are sometimes called "swatting". Police revealed few other details but said investigators identified a suspect who had made contact online with the woman earlier that day and that she was targeted because of her "online persona".
