Over time, living in a home with an elevated level of radon increases the residents' risk of developing lung cancer.
Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States - and the leading cause among non-smokers. Rocks and soil can contain uranium. But the only way to know if radon is present is to test it.
Free test kits are available at the Eureka County Cooperative Extension, 701 S. Main St., Eureka.
Radon in our homes is a significant health issue.
The Macomb County Health Department is stressing radon testing in the home by giving away free testing kits to the public. If your results show a radon level meeting or exceeding the 4 pCi/l EPA action limit, the Kendall County Health Department may be able to provide some low-priced starting points for reducing if not eliminating your risk.
Kits can be picked up at the public health clinic on Meade Street Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. That's why January is a great time to test, "said Chrystine Kelly, who serves as the CDPHS radon program manager, in a recent department press release". If levels of radon are high (4 pCi/L or higher), the Connecticut DPH strongly recommends that homeowners enlist a radon mitigation professional to help lower the levels. Minnesota has high radon levels due to its unique geology and cold climate. Such systems should be installed by a certified mitigation contractor.
The good news is test kits are pretty cheap at $10. The maximum reading for Greene County was 590 pCi/L, the minimum Greene County reading was 0.1 pCi/L, with an average reading of 7.14 pCi/L. "It's important to note that while there will always be a positive reading for radon in every home, it may not be at what is called an action level".
If testing shows that there is a radon problem, the homeowner will need to install a system that will prevent the radon from accumulating in the home. The envelope is sent to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality laboratory, where turnaround for the results is approximately two weeks.
The cost of a radon mitigation system can vary, but typically runs around $1,200. Lincoln County Health Department is always working for a safer and healthier Lincoln County.

But this time, it looks a little more plausible - he's set up a website and changed his profile pictures to an "Arpaio for U.S. It should come as no surprise, then, that the longtime Trump supporter immediately honed in on the president's voting base.
Australia recall Cameron White
Last week, captain Steve Smith called for Maxwell to "train a bit smarter" and trade in the "funky stuff" for the basics. However, White's selection came as a surprise as the veteran himself thought that his global career was nearly over.
