Illinois loses by 7 Iowa in Overtime - Recap, Box score
That kind of impact is one he hasn't made for Iowa in the last several games, but his effort on both ends gave the frontcourt a boost, and provided relief while Cook was shadowed heavily by IL. However, the Hawkeyes got after it on defense and Luka Garza had a breakout performance to help them outlast IL 104-97 in overtime for its first conference win.
After falling behind by 20 points in the first half, Iowa rallied to earn a 104-97 overtime victory over IL in a desperate battle between the Big Ten's last winless teams Thursday night at State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill.
Iowa, after giving up 54 points in the first half, only allowed 36 and 7 in the second half and overtime, respectively.
IL ranks 46th in assists allowed per game (11.5) while Iowa ranks 182nd (14.7).
IL made nine 3-pointers and shot 54.1 percent in the first half to build a double-digit lead.
IL scored 13 consecutive points with 13:56 left in the 1st Half, making the game 15-4 in favor of IL. Still, at halftime the Illini led 54-41, but they chose the wrong half to put up an outrageous number.
IL came into Thursday night as one of the more offensively challenged teams.
IL ranks 34th in steals per game (8.0) while Iowa ranks 162nd (5.4). In the second half, that issue came into play for IL.
Losing might have stung less if the Illini hadn't played like a champion before it really mattered.
Both teams are in fairly dire need of a win simply to escape what is now a shared Big Ten cellar. Iowa deserves credit for battling back from being down 49-29 on the road and coming out with a win. The Hawkeyes trailed by 23 points (38-15) with 13 seconds remaining in the first half in an eventual 65-56 win over Gardner-Webb in 2012 and trailed by 22 points (61-39) with 16 minutes left at IL in 1987 in a 91-88 overtime triumph.
Both teams had freshman that starred on this night. Garza made two free throws with 4.9 seconds left to give the Hawkeyes a 90-87 cushion, but Frazier dribbled up the right side and threw in the tying shot as the horn sounded. Mark Alstork and Leron Black fouled out and Da'Monte Williams would a bit later.
The Hawkeyes could scarcely have played a worse first half, save for rebounding and at the free throw line.
Freshman guard Trent Frazier scored a career-high 27 points. Frazier led IL with a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, while Leron Black and Aaron Jordan added 18 points each.
While Trent Frazier's running 3-pointer forced overtime - the Hawkeyes chose not to foul up three after doing so the possession before, counter to McCaffery's wishes - Iowa took care of business in overtime thanks to icing it at the free throw line, an and-1 from Luka Garza (hold that thought) and a big 3-pointer from Jordan Bohannon.
In the overtime period, Iowa took control of the game and made sure IL would not come back again. After trailing by 11 with 4:50 remaining, Iowa outscored the Illini 13-3 to send the game into overtime.
It is the third time in school history that Iowa has rallied from a 20-point deficit to win.
It certainly was not flawless.
"I don't know what it is about the second half, " Underwood said in a tense postgame news conference.
Iowa had their best run in the 2nd Half with 17:52 on the clock.
The Hawkeyes made five more free throws down the stretch to finish with 104 points - Iowa's largest output against IL in the series that dates back to 1908. "I felt like we put it all together over the full stretch of the game and into overtime".
