Jackson also called a number of memorable baseball games in the 1970's and 80's. "When you heard his voice, you knew it was a big game".
In addition to football, Jackson covered the World Series, NBA games, 10 Olympics and auto racing over a career that spanned more than 50 years. It is widely regarded as one of the best moments in the history of college football, from the actual on field play to Jackson's narration of it.
Jackson spent the final 11 years of his life at home in California with his wife Turi Ann.
Jackson began calling college football games for ABC Sports when it acquired the broadcast rights for NCAA football in 1966.
Jackson was known for his famous catch phrases such as "Woah Nellie" and is credited with nicknaming the Rose Bowl the "Granddaddy of Them All" and naming Michigan University's stadium the "Big House". He walked away for good in May 2006, telling The New York Times he was finished "forever".
Jackson started his broadcasting career in 1952 and remained a popular figure with ABC until his final broadcast in 2006, when he called a classic Rose Bowl between Texas and USC.
Jackson was born on October 18, 1928, in Georgia near the Alabama state line.
Jackson, who was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1999, was also honored by both the American Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame (1994) and the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame (1995).
