Zuma lists conditions for stepping down as president: report
The report said Zuma is adamant that after he steps down, Dlamini-Zuma, ex-wife of Zuma and now an ANC MP, takes over as the country's interim president until the 2019 general elections.
Ramaphosa, however, has reportedly turned down Zuma's demand for Dlamini-Zuma to be appointed Interim President and has suggested either Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu or National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete be appointed to the position temporarily.
"At the moment, it's a stalemate (on the conditions under which Zuma would agree to resign)".
Newly elected ANC secretary general Ace Magashule addressed the media on Friday‚ in a state-of-readiness briefing ahead of the party's annual January 8 statement‚ which will be delivered by ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday.
Magashule said the ANC welcomed the decision by the president to establish a judicial commission of inquiry into allegations of state capture.
Piotr Matys, emerging market strategist at Rabobank, warned that ousting Zuma could also cause trouble for the South African currency, saying that: "The governing ANC could be engulfed in political bickering between Zuma's camp and members of the party who voted for Ramaphosa".
This would mean, amongst other things, that Dlamini Zuma would retain presidential benefits after being an acting stateswoman.
The issue was however not discussed at the first NEC meeting held on Wednesday and may only feature at the next NEC meeting next week.
