Federal Judge Temporarily Stops DACA Repeal
Before the release of the senators' statement, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during the daily press briefing that no deal had been reached yet, but the Trump administration believes "we can get there".
At the meeting Trump questioned why the United States would want to accept immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as "sh-thole countries", according to two sources familiar with the comments. "What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!".
But Sen. Dick Durbin, the only Democrat in the room, disputed the president's account, saying Trump used the word "s-thole" a few times and made other "vile and racist" comments.
Trump took particular issue with the idea, explained by Durbin of IL, the Senate' s No. 2 Democrat, that, as part of the deal, people who fled to the USA after disasters hit their homes in places such as El Salvador, Guatemala and Haiti, would be allowed to stay. Tim Scott, as reported by the Post and Courier. Dick Durbin (D-IL), Sen.
".@POTUS must apologize for his abhorrent comments". Democrats have been willing to discuss changes to those programs, but aren't willing to go almost as far as people like Cotton or hardline White House advisers like Stephen Miller want. Here's South Carolina RepublicanLindsey Graham. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Sen.
The judge has not only ruled on the merits of the case, but made it clear to the Trump administration that he is not to harm them in any way until a final decision is reached.
Underscoring the pitfalls facing the effort, other Republicans also undercut the significance of the deal the half-dozen senators hoped to sell to Trump. Reps. Diana DeGette, Mike Coffman and Jared Polis all denounced Trump's comments as well.
DACA recipients and their advocates said the decision adds new urgency to negotiations between Congress and the White House on what to do about the dreamers, who are pushing for a path to citizenship.
"As to what sort of immigration legislation he would approve, Trump said that he was reliant on lawmakers and that even if they produced legislation he wasn't "in love with", he would still support it".
Amid the furore the president criticised the immigration proposal.
Trump on Friday panned the "so-called bipartisan DACA deal" as "a big step backwards".
On Thursday an Arizona senator announced a bipartisan deal was reached by some senators. That's according to three people who were briefed on the conversation but weren't authorized to describe it publicly.
Another parameter contained in the latest version of the Dream Act requires Dreamers to graduate from high school or earn a GED, pursue higher education, work lawfully for three-plus years or serve in the military, pass background checks and show proficiency in English.
And at another point, said he was willing to let Congress handle the details and would sign the bill they sent him.
In exchange, the deal would end extended family chain migration. The TPS would be renewable, the people with knowledge of the agreement said. It would limit immigrants with legal residency status from sponsoring adult children for immigration until they become citizens, he said.
"Every morning, the thought goes through my head, 'Is this the last day my parents are going to be here?'" said Vega, a 23-year-old Ventura College student who came to the country illegally with his parents when he was 3.
He says Trump wants to welcome immigrants who "contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation", and will always reject "temporary, weak and unsafe stopgap measures" that he says "threaten the lives of hardworking Americans" and undercut other immigrants. It's still unclear which countries would receive those visas, however.
