1000-hp Toyota GR Super Sport Concept previews race-honed hybrid hypercar

Toyota presents the GR Super Sport concept at Tokyo Auto Salon 2018
GAZOO Racing Company president Shigeki Tomoyama said the concept was the starting point for a broader plan to develop sports cars from race cars, which suggests this project could be separate from the Supra altogether. Check out this machine. That's been combined with an electrification system of hybrid motors, the Toyota Hybrid System-Racing, or THS-R, developed by the Toyota Gazoo Racing team.
Last year, Toyota boss Akio Toyoda said that as the auto industry approaches times of tremendous change he is "strongly determined to make sure that cars will be fun for the next 100 years" One small step towards that honorable goal would be Toyota turning its World Endurance Championship TS050 race vehicle into a road-going halo machine. We know that it gets a twin-turbo, direct injection V6 engine coupled with a Toyota Hybrid System lifted from the LMP1 vehicle. "I hope that the GR Super Sport Concept will give you a taste of what we aim to achieve with our next-generation sports cars". Acceleration figures haven't been mentioned but as you can imagine, it's not going to be slow. Say hello, then, to the GR Super Sport Concept, a sibling to the TS050 that now competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and certainly not your parents' Camry. It's called the GR Super Sport and for the time being it's officially only a concept.
While the hypercar is now only a concept, Autocar reports that Toyota is keen for its GR sports brand to produce more performance cars - particularly ones with hybrid powertrains.
At the end of last year, following the announcement that Toyota would continue competing in the WEC, President Akio Toyoda commented that 'more than 100 years have passed since the birth of the automobile. Despite the differences between the two concept models, both are electrified vehicles equipped with the latest IT technologies and are set to become safe and environmentally friendly connected cars.
So although this insane concept won't be hitting showrooms any time soon, it appears Toyota might be planning to launch a supercar of some kind in the near future.
