Trump reportedly made the remarks at a White House meeting on immigration on Thursday and a U.S. senator who attended the gathering said on Friday that the president used "vile, vulgar" language, including repeatedly using the word "s***hole".

He reportedly insulted Haitian and African nations by questioning why the USA would accept more immigrants from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa rather than places like Norway.

Trump's reported comments, made during closed-door White House talks on an immigration deal on Thursday, were a reaction to a plan drafted by a bipartisan group of senators to protect juvenile immigrants from deportation and make other changes to immigration laws and border security.

In another Twitter post, the president wrote that he "never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very troubled and poor country".

Trump's reported comments were also taken personally by Dr. Andrew Furey, an orthopedic surgeon in St. John's, N.L., and founder of Team Broken Earth, a group of medical professionals who responded to the Haitian natural disaster in 2010 and has since returned to the country several times. Durbin said that one in particular, Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) confronted the president after he made the comments. "Do we need more Haitians?" "They reinforce abhorrent racist attitudes, and evidence of the lack of knowledge, understanding, and empathy we expect of the person who occupies the highest office in the land".

"This says a lot about what Trump thinks it means to be an American".

The African Union, an organization comprised of all 55 African nations, blasted President Donald Trump's comments that the continent contained "shithole countries."

"Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, said he heard Trump repeatedly refer to African countries as "****holes", at a Thursday meeting.

The ANC is not in a position to stop any president from any country from saying anything they wish, she said. "He said those hateful things". When I mentioned that fact to him, he said, 'Haitians?

Trump scrapped an Obama-era programme that gave the 800,000 young immigrants legal protection, setting a March deadline for Congress to offer a fix - though it has been reinstated by a court, for now. "I have a wonderful relationship with Haitians!"

Donald Trump ragging on immigrants from "sh*hole countries" in a January 11 Oval Office meeting has gotten him into some deep. well, sh*t. Former VP Joe Biden also had choice words about Trump's language, tweeting, "It's not what a president should believe".
