A day after reaching a one-year agreement with the Pittsburgh Pirates to avoid arbitration, right-hander Gerrit Cole was traded to the Houston Astros.

In return, the Pirates received pitchers Joe Musgrove, Michael Feliz, outfielder Jason Martin and third baseman Colin Moran.

HOUSTON (AP) - The Houston Astros already had two Cy Young winners on their staff.

Cole burst onto the scene in 2013, and proved to be a driving force on the team that finally broke the 20-year long losing streak. In the end, Cole will in fact be joining the reigning World Champion Astros' rotation.

Verlander and Keuchel were quite pleased with the move. Houston breezed to the AL West title with 101 wins, and went on beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7 of the World Series.

He went 12-12 over 33 starts and compiled a 4.26 ERA in 2017, a season after he missed serious time with elbow inflammation.

Cole, the former No. 1 overall pick out of UCLA in 2011, is married to Brandon Crawford's sister Amy.

"We don't focus too much on short-term performance", Houston General Manager Jeff Luhnow told reporters after the trade was announced. "We expect him to bounce back and be a Cy Young contender".

The New York Yankees had been among the teams mentioned in trade talks involving Cole.

The 2015 campaign was far and away the best for Cole, who went 19-8 with a 2.60 ERA, 1.091 WHIP, 2.66 FIP and 4.5 WAR, while striking out 202 hitters against 44 walks over a grand total of 32 starts.

Cole will make $6.75 million this season after settling with the Pirates in arbitration, and he'll be eligible for arbitration again year after next season.

The Pirates have slumped badly since those three straight postseason appearances.

Moran, 25, has appeared in 16 games at the Major League Baseball level over the last two seasons.
