Passports no longer your address proof!
India has chose to do away with the last page of the passport that contains the names of the spouse, parents and address of the passport-holder.
Media reports also claimed that the ministry is also considering to change the colours of the passports.
Passports are now issued in three colours - government officers are issued white passport, diplomats issued red passports and all others are blue. As of now, on the last page of the passport includes names of father/legal guardian, mother, spouse, and address.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi today objected to the government's decision to issue orange-coloured passport to people with Emigration Check Required (ECR) status and called it a result of "BJP's discriminatory mindest". At present, most passports (expect for diplomats and government officials) have a blue cover.
ECR passport holders require clearance from the Protector General of Emigrants to go overseas in order to prevent exploitation.
The new passport booklets will be designed by the Indian Security Press (ISP) in Nashik.
Currently, the first page of the passport has the photograph as well as other details of the passport holder; the address is printed on the last page. "One of the recommendations of the Committee was that the Ministry of External Affairs should explore the possibility of doing away with the printing of information contained in the last page of the passport", the spokesperson added. The Controller General said that persons obtaining new passports would be issued with the new document while those holding the current passports could use them until the validity ended. The committee also looked upon the passport issues relating to the children with single parent and that of adopted children.
Since this will take time to implement, new passports will continue to be issued in the old format and the existing booklets will remain valid till their scheduled expiry date, the external affairs ministry said.
