Acne may put you at risk of major depression, research says
10 February 2018, 07:45 | Randall Craig
While it's highly common for teens to have breakouts more children are also suffering from the skin condition
"Over the 15-year follow-up, the probability of developing major depressive order was 18.5% among patients with acne and 12% in the general population without acne", they write in the British Journal of Dermatology.
Given the results, physicians may need to screen patients with acne for possible symptoms of a mood disorder. They were also less likely to use alcohol or be obese.
"It appears that acne is a lot more than just skin deep". The hypothesis is confirmed by the fact that people who went to a doctor to help them fix their acne issues had a higher risk of depression than people without acne problems. The mental health concerns should be taken seriously, researcher warned. Teens, in particular, are vulnerable to the emotional impacts of acne. "Many studies have shown that having acne can lead to depression, anxiety, or both", the AAD said. The risk was 63 percent higher compared to individuals without acne, the study says. the researchers concluded that acne patients are at a higher risk of depression.
Besides getting treatment, there are also other ways to deal with acne.
Do you suffer from acne? "But it's a much better idea to be around other people", NY dermatologist Whitney Bowe advised. Psoriasis, another skin problem, has always been associated with mental health issues.
Scientists in the United Kingdom, publishing this week in the British Journal of Dermatology, shared findings that clearly showed an increased risk of experiencing major depression in those with acne, as compared to those without.
People with acne were more likely to be female, younger, nonsmokers and of higher socioeconomic status.
