Mahesh Murthy arrested by Mumbai Police on sexual harassment charges
Leading angel investor Mahesh Murthy was on Friday arrested by Mumbai Police for allegedly sexually harassing several women on social media platforms, including WhatsApp.
He has been arrested under various charges including molestation andsexual harassment, deputy police commissioner Deepak Devraj, whois a spokeperson of city police, said.
Murthy is the managing partner and co-founder of Seedfund.
The arrest of Murthy, the founder of early stage fund Seedfund, comes after the National Commission for Women (NCW) wrote to the Khar police in December past year.
The NCW had made an intervention, following which Khar police filed a case against Murthy under section 354 (D), 509 of IPC and section 67 of the IT Act, the official said.
The Delhi-based complainant then approached the NCW for help, said police.
The woman approached the NCW past year with a written complaint alleging Murthy used objectionable, derogatory, obscene signs and sexual remarks against her on social media.
On December 25 past year, the Delhi-based entrepreneur had filed a complaint against him with the National Commission for Women, stating that Murthy, 52, had allegedly made objectionable, derogatory and obscene gestures and sexual remarks while messaging her on WhatsApp.
In her post, she said, "I wished Mahesh Murthy Merry Christmas n a new year I got a response something like that".
Khar police senior inspector Ramchandra Jadhav confirmed Murthy's arrest and said he had been booked for stalking, sexual harassment and publishing or transmitting obscene material. "I will fight this too in court to defend my reputation", he added. "I am told it was a procedural technical arrest and I have already been released on surety", Murthy tweeted.
She had complained about Murthy's alleged use of objectionable language online.
Police said Murthy has been booked under sections 354 (D) (stalking) and 509 (word, gesture or act meant to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC along with sections 67 (A) under the IT Act.
Murthy founded Pinstorm, a digital advertising firm in 2004.
Pandey, who chose to go public with her allegations against Murthy, said, "I am no longer ashamed of what I went through".
