More than 1,500 USA flights have been canceled Friday as a winter storm slammed the Midwest with at least 1 inch of snow per hour.

Dozens of schools across the Chicago area canceled classes Friday -- including Chicago Public Schools.

Early this morning, the National Weather Service received reports of 4 inches of snow in northern IL, including near Chicago's Midway Airport.

Winter weather this week killed people in accidents in the Midwest, including six in Iowa, two in Missouri and one in Montana, local media in those states reported.

Volunteers with the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow reported nearly 2 inches of snow in Utica and Bloomfield Township.

The city of Marshall will be under a snow emergency from 9 p.m. tonight until 6 a.m. Saturday, city officials announced this afternoon.

Flights out of Chicago to west MI airports began cancelling Thursday night and that may mean some disruption in travel schedules today.

"Make no mistake about it: This is a heavy snow, heavier than we have seen in a number of winters", Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told CNN Thursday.

Anyone who needed to travel Friday morning should allow for extra time, the service stated.

A foot of snow is still a big deal for Chicagoans. Forecasters think the Chicago area could get up to 12 inches of snow.

Snow-related crashed snarled highways across southern MI, with one person killed when a semitrailer struck the rear of a vehicle stopped in traffic on USA 23 near Flint, police said.

Chicagoans headed to grocery and hardware stores Thursday to stock up on food and essentials before the storm.

Authorities across IL prepared some 300 pieces of snow-fighting equipment and thousands of tons of salt for almost 16,000 miles of highways and state roads.

The Indiana Department of Transportation resorted to sending teams of as many as four plows simultaneously to clear some highways.

"Our crews are out in full force clearing snow but please consider postponing any unnecessary travel!" Snow and brutal cold will continue Friday for central and southern Montana. Cities and towns north of Lafayette may have additional snow accumulations by Friday evening. "This is the first real winter we've had in several years".
