MN Rep. Nolan says he won't seek re-election to Congress
10 February 2018, 07:46 | Devin Moran
"Despite the fact that our nation is being challenged by some rather troubling politics, let's remember that our founders foresaw hard times and gave us the tools to see them through", said Nolan. "Make no mistake - I love my work representing you in the Congress, and the decision to leave is agonizing to say the least - especially when thinking of all the many volunteers, contributors, party leaders, colleagues, supporters - and of course the voters - who have all meant so much to our success".
Nolan, 74, had won three straight elections in Minnesota's Iron Ranger, the northern tier that was once a mining and manufacturing home to union workers loyal to the state's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party leaders. Nolan eked out a win for a third term in 2016 while Trump carried the district by a whopping 15 percentage points.
It's a reversal for Nolan, who turned down calls to run for governor a year ago in favour of running for a fourth term in Congress.
Nolan was first elected to Congress as the Representative of Minnesota's then-6th Congressional District in 1974, an office in which he served through 1981.
Nolan didn't endorse any candidate, although he said there were a high number of potential Democratic candidates to replace him in the 8th District seat.
Nolan's recent elections have been among the most competitive and expensive in the nation. Ben Ray Lujan, D-Minn., chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in a statement.
Republican Stewart Mills, who has run against Nolan before, said he's considering running again.
Current Republican frontrunner Pete Stauber, the St. Louis County commissioner and former Duluth police officer, said he wished Nolan well during the final months of his term and offered to help Nolan with any mutually agreed-upon issues.
"Minnesota's Eighth District was already a top pickup opportunity in the country for national Republicans, and today's news (puts) Stauber in an even stronger position", read a statement from the state GOP. He already faced at least one primary challenger.
