Despite the call for election boycott, the mainstream political parties chose to defy the boycott diktat and contested the election as 256 candidates from BJP, Congress, Naga People's Front (NPF), National Democratic Political Party (NDPP), National People's Party (NPP) and few other parties had filed their nomination papers to ensure the polls.

On Tuesday, Kuzholuzo Azo Nienu from the ruling Naga People's Front became the first to file his nomination papers.

Chief Electoral Officer Abhijit Sinha told reporters that compiling the final list party-wise is taking time because of last-hour rush.

The last date for withdrawal of nomination is 12 February.

NPF candidate Chupfu-o was going to file nomination paper but he has been obstructed by Neiphiu Rio, contestant of Northern Angami constituency, at Nerhema Village at around 2:20 pm, NPF general secretary S Akho Leyri complained to the EC.

Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya said a total of 443 nominations have been filed.

Former Chief Ministers Salseng C. Marak and Donkupar Roy filed their nomination papers as nominee of the Congress and United Democratic Party.

Altogether candidates of nine political parties submitted their nomination papers besides Independents.

Our correspondent reports that several heavyweight candidates including from Congress, UDP and BJP have their nominations.

The candidate, however, managed to file the nomination papers after security was provided by authorities, Mr Sinha said.

"We fully support the prudent decision of the Naga people for solution of the Naga issue and hence, not to go for election".
