Pence had kept open the possibility for some contact with the North Koreans in South Korea, while reiterating Washington's insistence that denuclearisation by North Korea is a necessary condition for permanent peace.

Friday's Opening Ceremony came a day after a major military parade in the North Korean capital, during which Pyongyang showcased several recently tested Hwasong-14 and 15 rocket and marked the foundation of the country's army.

2,952 athletes from 92 National Olympic Committees will compete, including the debut of Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore.

During the meeting, Pence warned that the world would see "a charm offensive by North Korea" Friday.

"Had it not been for the PyeongChang Olympics, some of us might not have had the chance to be together in the same room", Moon said. (Picture: AFP/ Yonhap) The pair are scheduled to meet with South Korean president Moon Jae-in on Saturday in a luncheon at Seoul's presidential palace.

Mr Moon has been trying to use the games as an opportunity to revive meaningful communication with North Korea after a period of diplomatic stalemate.
