Council tax rises 2018 – how much could rates increase and when would the new fees start?
Almost every household in England is facing council tax rises of £100 or more as councils struggle to pay for adult social care, children's services, housing and homelessness support.
The research reveals 95 per cent of councils plan to raise council tax, while 93 per cent are aiming to increase service charges in areas such as waste, planning, parking, social care, bereavement and meals on wheels.
Council taxes can rise by 3 per cent this year in line with inflation. While the survey found poor transport infrastructure was the top-rated "barrier to economic growth" for the 113 councils that responded to the survey, 33 per cent said they planned cut highways and transport funding this financial year.
Last week, Northamptonshire County Council become the first for almost 20 years to face emergency measures banning new spending. Any larger increases will trigger a local referendum.
Lord Porter, chairman of the Local Government Association, the body which speaks for local councils, added that some authorities are "perilously close" to financial collapse.
The Conservative-run council has projected overspend of £21.1m for 2017-18 and its chief financial officer warned predictions for the following year were "grave".
A spokesman for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government said: "Our finance settlement strikes a balance between relieving growing pressure on local government whilst ensuring that hard-pressed taxpayers do not face excessive bills".
"They are managing to protect the services we all care about, caring for older people, protecting vulnerable children".
