VLC Media Player 3.0 is out with support for HDR, Chromecast playback and more
The latest version of the video player has been rolled out on Android, iOS devices, Apple TV, Windows, Linux and every other major platform.
The incredible app which is provided for free on major platforms has now received VLC 3.0 with a laundry list of unbelievable new features including Chromecast support, HDR and many more.
To remind you, OnePlus Switch is primarily used at the time of migrating to a new OnePlus smartphone. The developers have even launched a version of the same on the Xbox One console for people who use their gaming console as a media box and test its potency with different file formats.
VideoLAN is also laying the groundwork for a forthcoming VR version with 3.0 offering support for 360-degree video and 3D audio. 4K televisions from major brands like Sony, LG, and Samsung are being updated with HDR.
VideoLAN, the nonprofit organization behind the popular VLC Media Player released the version 3.0 of the app today. They did this to maintain the 100% open source integrity of VLC - Google's Chromecast stack isn't open source - and it's also why there is no voice actions for VLC (except on Android Auto, but we'll get to that). Now the feature has reached the stable branch, with the release of VLC 3.0.
VLC explains in another post why Chromecast support took as long to arrive as it did, but it really comes down to the fact that Google's streaming platform is meant for just that, streaming. However, due to Chromecast supporting a handful of codecs, the company would first have to convert the local file you want to play into Chromecast's preferred format and then stream it to the television. Other highlights include the ability to watch Blue-ray-sourced video with full menu functionality (though it needs to be decoded somewhere besides VLC).
