Several of the states expecting the heaviest snowfall are now issuing storm warnings, including in Ohio, Michigan, Northern Indiana, Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin, and Eastern Iowa, and thousands of flights have been canceled. Those could bring another 3 to 9 inches total.
Chicago could get around a foot of snow - 8 to 14 inches - by late Friday, plus 4 more inches through the weekend, forecasters said.
Both Chicago and Detroit are in the cross hairs of the storm, and widespread flight delays and cancellations are likely at both cities' airports. More than 260 flights were canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan.
Ice and snow covered Chicago's expressways, where there were at least 25 crashes overnight, the Chicago Tribune reported.
While it isn't too bad the most major delays seem to be flights to Ohio, Illinois especially flights to Chicago and to cities in MI like Kalamazoo, Lansing and Alpena.
Most school districts cancelled classes on Friday before any snow started falling, including the Chicago Public Schools.
The storm system is coming down from Montana and is expected to arrive around the dinner hour this evening.
